IDAHO SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE INITIATIVE FOR DAIRY

Transforming Dairy Waste into Sustainable Solutions

What is the ISAID Grant?

The Idaho Sustainable Agriculture Initiative for Dairy (ISAID) grant, a USDA Sustainable Agriculture Systems initiative, responds to the critical challenges posed by the exponential growth of Idaho's dairy industry. The state of Idaho is the third-largest dairy producer in the U.S., managing the increased volumes of liquid and solid manure presents significant hurdles. High concentrations of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from imported feed and fertilizer usage have led to underutilization by soil and plants. The ISAID grant aims to convert these excess N and P from dairy production into valuable bioproducts, including commercial fertilizers and bioplastics. The ultimate goal is to create a dairy bioeconomy that enhances soil health, sustains agricultural productivity, minimizes environmental impacts, and fosters economic opportunities, thus forging a circular system that optimizes resource use and reduces waste. Mark McGuire, the CALS associate dean, leads a dedicated team of 78 individuals, including faculty, Extension educators, and students, to drive this transformative initiative forward.

Manure to Clean Water

The Clean Water Machine is an innovative system designed to purify water by removing contaminants and impurities through advanced filtration processes. Using various technologies like sedimentation, filtration, and chemical treatments; it effectively cleanses water, making it safe and suitable for reuse or even consumption after reverse osmosis. This invention is huge for water purification advancement and environmental sustainability efforts.

Manure to Bioplastic

We convert manure into bioplastic by harnessing innovative techniques such as fermentation and polymerization. Initially, manure undergoes a transformation into volatile fatty acids (VFAs), which are further processed by naturally occurring bacteria to create biodegradable thermoplastics called polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). This approach ingeniously repurposes agricultural waste, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly method to produce bioplastics.

Manure to Soil Amendments

We blend manure with various soil amendments, such as hydrochar and biochar, using innovative techniques. By utilizing hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), the manure is transformed into a slow-release soil amendment. Additionally, biochar, another soil enhancer derived from biomass, is incorporated with manure to create an efficient and nutrient-rich blend, fostering healthier soil while mitigating the risk of nutrient leaching.
