I am a M.S. in Applied Economics graduate student working with Dr. Alex Maas. Several years ago, Dr. Erik Coats’ lab team developed a method to convert fermented dairy manure waste into a biodegradable bioplastic that can be used in similar applications to conventional oil-derived thermoplastics. My project, using stated preference surveys, is to estimate consumers’ willingness-to-pay for products using biobased bioplastics. This is being done through a discrete choice experiment consisting of choices between plastic policies that mandate biodegradable bioplastics replace specific plastic products that vary in their attributes. By analyzing the survey results, estimates for willingness-to-pay for the various attributes can be calculated, leading to a better understanding of the market demand and viability of different bioplastic sources and products. After completing my degree, I am planning to pursue a position as

an agricultural extension educator, to assist producers and the public with access to information about agricultural production. I am particularly interested in the intersection of agriculture and conservation, and how food can be produced more sustainably, efficiently, and with less environmental impact.
